1994 EAST COAST DEVELOPER CONFERENCE
The first annual East Coast NEXTSTEP Developer Conference will be held in Washington, D.C., from January 24 through 26 at the Sheraton Washington. Corporate developers, commercial developers, MIS managers, and system integrators from the East Coast and Europe will come together to learn more about object-oriented computing with NEXTSTEP and to share their experiences. Steve Jobs will be the conference's first day keynote speaker; Paul Strassman, former Director of Defense Information for the U.S. Government, will give the second day keynote presentation.
The conference is intended primarily for those who missed the Developer Conference at NEXTWORLD EXPO last May, and for those new to NEXTSTEP. The agenda will complement the upcoming West Coast Developer Conference to be held at the same time as NeXTWORLD EXPO in June 1994.
Tutorials to build fundamentals
The opening day of the conference is devoted to half-day tutorials. These include introductory tutorials on the user and developer systems, and advanced tutorials on Object-Oriented Design and the Database Kit.
If you're new to NEXTSTEP, the introductory tutorials provide a good starting point for the conference. They build a framework you can use in the conference tracks.
| Introduction to NEXTSTEP is a guided tour of the NEXTSTEP user environment. It familiarizes you with the metaphors and common user interface designs in NEXTSTEP as well as the major applications provided by NeXT.
Introduction to the NEXTSTEP Development Environment walks you through the steps of building a simple NEXTSTEP application. It shows you how to use tools like Project Builder and Interface Builder, and demonstrates debugging techniques using the integrated graphical debugging tools. |
If you are already familiar with NEXTSTEP and are interested in learning about a specific new
area or want more depth in a topic, the advanced tutorials are for you.
| Object-Oriented Design covers some of the concepts you need to know to analyze and design object-oriented programs. This tutorial doesn't focus on a particular methodology; it presents basic concepts required by all analysts and designers.
Introduction to Database Kit shows you how to access enterprise-wide data while taking advantage of all the user-interface tools in NEXTSTEP. It focuses on Database Modeler, Interface Builder, and the Database Kit palette. |
Specialized session tracks
The conference sessions on January 25 and 26 are divided into four tracks:
| NeXT in the Marketplace offers non-technical overviews of the services and development opportunities offered with NEXTSTEP. The Art of Design focuses on how object oriented design can create better objects, applications, and systems. A Closer Look provides in-depth information about NEXTSTEP's object kits and distributed object technology. Hardware Is Inevitable addresses configuration issues, system administration, and differences between hardware platforms. |
General sessions
The Conference features two general sessions that are repeats of the most popular sessions at the May Developer Conference. Both cover broad topics critical to general programming.
| The Zen of Debugging is presented by Julie Zelenski, a lecturer in Stanford University's Department of Computer Science and a member of NeXT's Developer Support Team. This is an opportunity to refine your debugging skills and learn some new ones.
Getting More Speed Out of Your Application is presented by Trey Matteson, Manager of the Application Kit Group at NeXT. This session shows you how to focus your performance tuning efforts on areas that produce the most significant gains, such as memory allocation and drawing speed. |
Hands-on tutorials
During the Conference, you can sign up for one-on-one time with members of NeXT's training staff. These brief user and developer tutorials are offered free on a sign-up basis. They are a good way to get additional practice if you are new to NEXTSTEP, or to get help on a particular topic if you have NEXTSTEP experience already.
Special developer bundle
Conference attendees can purchase a single copy of both the NEXTSTEP User and Developer releases and a single user license of Borland's InterBase SQLTM database server, including the Database Kit InterBase Adapter. This special bundle is available only at the conference for $995.
