NEXTSTEP Developer Release 3.3 includes new features that further improve programmer productivity and application robustness. Support for new PC hardware and RISC CPU architectures lets programmers develop device drivers for a broader range of hardware platforms. Foundation Kit provides an implementation of many of the new OPENSTEP features, deployable under NEXTSTEP Release 3.3 today.

HIGHLIGHTS

Improved Visual Programming
The key to rapid application development is reducing the amount of code you write. NEXTSTEP Developer's fully object-oriented tools and strong support for visual programming allow developers to build complex applications with far fewer lines of code, five to ten times faster. NEXTSTEP Developer Release 3.3 improves support for visual programming by providing both visual verification of Interface Builder connections and the ability to build complex new components in Interface Builder, without writing code.

Open Application Architecture
Developers use NEXTSTEP's open architecture to seamlessly integrate their custom applications with the NEXTSTEP user environment. This presents a simple, consistent look and feel to corporate users, reducing training and support costs, and increasing user productivity for custom applications. Release 3.3 continues to open the NEXTSTEP architecture, adding public APIs to Unix shells and the login window.

OPENSTEP Preview
OPENSTEP is the industry standard specification for a distributed, object-oriented application framework. Based on NeXT's advanced object technology, OPENSTEP provides source code portability by ensuring that applications written to the OPENSTEP API will compile and run on all OPENSTEP compliant platforms. This broadly supported open standard guarantees the return on your investment in custom software development, regardless of changes in your hardware or operating system deployment infrastructure.

Foundation Kit, included in NEXTSTEP Developer Release 3.3, provides a preview of OPENSTEP and an implementation of some of its important features. Applications based on Foundation Kit can be deployed on NEXTSTEP Release 3.3 today.

Extended Hardware Support
NeXT's Multi-Architecture Binaries simplify application deployment by allowing developers to build one application binary that runs on multiple CPU architectures. Release 3.3 extends this support to a total of four platforms: Intel, Processors, HP PA-RISC and Sun SPARC workstations, and NeXT computers.

NeXT's Driver Kit supports full object-oriented development of device drivers. Release 3.3 provides support for emergent PC standards, including PCI, PCMCIA, and Advanced Power Management.

Upgraded Compiler: Gnu Compiler version 2.5.8
Over a dozen new features and an upgraded Gnu compiler provide improved compiler error and warning generation, object code tuning, and C++ code integration. New C++ features include support for templates, multiple inheritance, virtual functions, and more.

Extended Multi-Architecture Binaries: MAB Support for Motorola 68K, Intel, HP PA-RISC and Sun SPARC platforms.

Fully object-oriented class libraries allow you to develop drivers for new PC technologies in NeXT's seamless development environment. Supports PCI, PCMCIA and Advanced Power Management.

Open Application APIs: Login Window Bundles, Open DO API to Terminal, IP Multicast support
Lets you customize logins so users login simultaneously to NEXTSTEP, Kerberos Servers, Novell networks, or other systems with one standardlogin panel. Simplifies custom application integration with Unix shells by providing a public DO interface to the Terminal application.Full IP Multicast support for broadcast messaging provides the framework for multimedia networking, as well as broadcast capabilities for live information feeds.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

NEXTSTEP Developer Release 3.3 requires NEXTSTEP Release 3.3 for Intel Processors, SPARC or PA-RISC workstations, or NeXT Computers.

NEXTSTEP Developer requires a 330 MB hard disk or larger; 16 MB of RAM or more is recommended.

NEXTSTEP Developer comes on a single CD-ROM.
