Q: Why is it that my Abaton fax modem can send a fax just fine but won't answer the phone, despite my having set the Rings to Answer in PrintManager?

A: If your Modem's Number field in PrintManager contains "illegal" characters you see this problem.  What, then, are "legal" characters for this field?  Only the digits, space, and plus sign are legal for the Abaton InterFax 24/96 NX.  No, hyphens and parentheses are not legal; neither are dots.

Note that these two fields are in PrintManager's Fax Options panel.

We have not seen this with the Dove fax modem.  If you have illegal characters in the Modem's Number with a Dove then it is as if you supplied nothing in that field.  In addition, the Dove accepts dots in the Modem's Number field.

We have not tested other fax modems.

One other thing (in 2.0, 2.1, and 2.2 only).  In order for some of the fields in the Fax Options panel to take effect initially, you must run the configuration twice.  So, click the New button in PrintManager, configure the modem, save the configuration (using the OK button), and then repeat this using the Configure button.  This is true regardless of which fax modem you're using.
